Wednesday’s prep roundup: Sierra rallies past Palmer to earn first boys’ basketball win of season
Sierra 66, Palmer 61 (OT)
At Boulder: Behind a team-high 23 points from Derrian Reed and a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds by Isaiah Wilburn, Sierra rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to force overtime and outlast Palmer (1-4) in a consolation game at the Fairview Festival.
Wilburn also had four steals and two blocked shots for Sierra (1-2).
Doherty 68, Lincoln 49
At Highlands Ranch: Kyrele Benford (15 points and 12 rebounds) and Joe Golden (11 points and 15 rebounds) both had double-doubles for Doherty (2-0), which used a 22-9 second-quarter run to take control of Lincoln in first-day action from the ThunderRidge/Chaparral Tipoff.
The Spartans will meet ThunderRidge (5-0) in a semifinal contest at 7 p.m. Friday. The other semifinal features Chaparral, the co-host, playing defending 4A state champ Valor Christian, also at 7 p.m. Friday.
Isaiah Donis added 13 points for Doherty, who led 11-8 before the pivotal second-quarter run.
TCA 64, Manitou Springs 56
At Manitou Springs: TCA (3-1) took command in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs 36-23 to offset a 22-point performance from Cole Sienknecht.
Manitou Springs (2-2) led 33-28 at halftime.
Falcon 84, St. Mary’s 52
At St. Mary’s: Falcon (2-0) started strong with a 27-9 first-quarter advantage and never let up in a nonleague win at St. Mary’s (0-3).
Camden Raedel’s 3-pointer brought St. Mary’s to within 11-7, but Rhaven Brown responded with a basket to start a 16-2 Falcon run to end the quarter.
TCA 43, Manitou Springs 40
At TCA: Raegan Bervig had a team-high 13 points, and TCA rallied late to build a late 10-point lead, then held off Manitou Springs as the Titans won their home opener over their former Tri-Peaks League rival.
Maren Mildestredt paced Manitou Springs (1-2) with a game-high 22 points, helping the Mustangs to a 28-27 lead after three quarters.
Denver East 54, Mesa Ridge 47
At Littleton: Ashley Bowen’s double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, along with 21 points from Chloe Welch weren’t enough to overcome a Denver East second-half rally as the Angels downed Mesa Ridge in first-day action at the Dakota Ridge Christmas Classic.
Denver East (1-0) outscored Mesa Ridge (2-2) 13-10 in both the third and fourth quarters.
The Grizzlies return to tournament action at 7 p.m. Friday against Green Mountain.
Pine Creek 61, Erie 52
At Lafayette: Bri Bailey led all scorers with 27 points, and Pine Creek recovered late after nearly blowing a 22-point lead as the Eagles beat Erie at the Boulder County Invitational.
Jordyn Gutierrez added 11 points for the Eagles (2-1), who carried a 42-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Pine Creek next meets Ralston Valley at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a semifinal-round game
Doherty 74, Smoky Hill 23
At Littleton: Doherty (2-0) scored the game’s first 27 points and rolled past Smoky Hill (1-3) in action from the Dakota Ridge Christmas Classic.
Brionna McBride led Doherty with 19 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists.
The Spartans return to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Monarch.
Lewis-Palmer 118, Pueblo County 68
At Country Club at Woodmoor: Faith McAllister and Aubrey Huffman had individual wins and helped a relay squad to victory as Lewis-Palmer downed Pueblo County.
McAllister, a senior, took first in the 100 butterfly, while Huffman, a freshman, took top honors in the 100 backstroke.
The tandem swam the first two legs in the Rangers’ victorious 400 free relay.
Manitou Springs 133, Widefield/Mesa Ridge 46
At Widefield Community Center: Sydney Dolloff-Holt took first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and teammate Sofia Cirko won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke to highlight Manitou Springs’ clean-sweep victory over the District 3 consolidated team of Widefield and Mesa Ridge.
Canon City 47, Pine Creek 29
At Pine Creek: Pine Creek and Canon City had five wins apiece on the mat, but four victories by forfeit boosted the Tigers past a depleted Eagles team still getting athletes ready from the recently completed football season.
James Ruona and Mason Coleson ended matches early for Canon City at 132 and 106 pounds, respectively, while Pine Creek got pins from Draygan Colonese (145), Kian Colonese (160), Zachary Vannaman (182) and Garrett Niel (182).
Coronado 48, Palmer 18
At Coronado: Say Doe Htoo (126), Ben Tonnessen (170) and Andrew Gordon (182) recorded pins for Coronado, which also took five matches by forfeit in a win over District 11 rival Palmer.
Max Rojenendran (138) and Joel Vasquez (285) led Palmer with pins, and Dylan Owens-Hailey added a sudden-victory triumph in the 132-pound weight class.
Falcon 46, Mitchell 24
At Falcon: First-period pins by Shenin Steele (106 pounds) and Victor Lopez (145) highlighted Falcon’s victory over Mitchell.
Connor Tarver and Stryder Sartor also recorded pins for the Falcons at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively.
Mitchell had pins from Kevin Johnson (152) and Chris Utley (113).
Pueblo County 48, Cheyenne Mountain 24
At Cheyenne Mountain: The two-time defending 4A state champions got seven pins and two others by decision as Pueblo County downed Cheyenne Mountain.
Mike McFadden, who was runner-up at 132 pounds at last season’s 4A state meet, recorded a second-period pin to win his match at the 145-pound weight class, while teammate Miklo Gibb added a pin at 160 pounds.
Kevin Hooks (152) and Coloton Bellew (195) earned wins by decision.
Fountain-Fort Carson 58, Rampart 18
At Fountain-Fort Carson: Kyle Stalder had a third-period pin at 170 pounds for Fountain-Fort Carson, which also got three wins by decision and seven more by forfeit in a dual victory over Rampart.
Rampart was paced by Benjamin Bancroft, Jakob Turley and Ryan Moore, who had pins in the 138, 145 and 152 weight classes, respectively.
Doherty 84, Coronado 0
At Doherty: Daniel Chavez (113 pounds), Daniel Joey Shaw (132), Tyson Beauperthuy (138), and Logan Maslanik (182) all had first-minute pins to pace Doherty, which had seven pins overall and won another seven matches by forfeit.
Discovery Canyon 46, Mountain Range 26
At Discovery Canyon: Ben Ramsdell and Jett Strickenberger started the night with first-period pins at 220 and 106 pounds, respectively, and Discovery Canyon never trailed in a dual win over Mountain Range.
Devun O’Hara (170), David Biddy (160) and Zachary Holzwarth (120) also recorded pins for the Thunder.
Cheyenne Mountain 5, Doherty 3
At Sertich: TJ Farrell’s third goal of the game 5:02 into the third period broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Cheyenne Mountain to a win over Doherty.
Ryan Smith and Chayse Heffler also scored for the Indians (2-1), who converted on two of three power-play opportunities.
Smith’s power-play goal with 2:16 left in the second period tied the game at 3, following Zachary Fellinger’s goal minutes earlier that gave the Spartans (0-1) their first lead.
Tanner Chapman and Scott Sellers II also had goals for Doherty.
