Pikes Pick: Take a magical journey with Menna van Praag's 'The House at the End of Hope Street'
I'm savoring Menna van Praag's 2013 novel "The House at the End of Hope Street" in the hopes it never will end. Main character Alba winds up on the doorstep of a magical house when her life comes to a crossroad. The residence's caretaker Peggy tells her she's welcome to stay and attempt to turn her life around with the help of the house but on one condition: She only has 99 days to do so. Van Praag's writing reminds me a bit of Paulo Coelho's novels, where wisdom is woven into the text in such an innocuous way you barely notice.
