Klee blog: Broncos Country will be Case Keenum Country, according to report
There's always a history with these Broncos. They trust what and who they know. There's the Elway-Kubiak thing, and Kubiak's back, and when Vance Joseph was hired as coach, he listed Kubiak as his top influence in coaching.
It goes on, and that's probably a big reason why Case Keenum is going to be the next starting quarterback of the Broncos. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday night that Keenum, a 30-year-old who threw a nice ball to Stefon Diggs to help the Vikings to the NFC championship game, plans to sign with the Broncos when free agency opens.
Unless it's some kind of crazy contract, this is a better idea for the Broncos than Kirk Cousins. Too much money with too many other holes.
Anyway, the connection this time: Keenum began his career as an undrafted free agent with Kubiak's Texans in 2012. I lobbied back in November for Kubiak to return to the Broncos in a personnel spot. I thought they needed the right guy to pick the right guy. They picked Kubiak's guy. Looks like winning Super Bowl 50 came with a prominent voice along with a sweet ring.
Keenum threw 155 touchdowns in college. I can't wrap my head around that. He is a devout Christian. He's a professional transplant — NFL stops in Houston to St. Louis to Los Angeles to Minnesota to Denver — so he'll fit right in. Keenum once threw nine touchdowns in a college game at Houston. Can't wrap my head around that, either, and why were they still throwing? And he met Gary Kubiak on a golf course. (They trust what they know.) Keenum was cut by Bill O'Brien's Texans. He's going to be so rich now.
The contract will tell plenty about the Broncos' plans in the draft and if they can afford another big splash or two in free agency.
Yes, Keenum is 30, and that's not old for a quarterback, but I don't think this precludes Denver from taking a quarterback at No. 5. (Or they like Chad Kelly, the most mysterious backup here since the last one.) Can't imagine this would be a lush, long-term deal for a quarterback with one starring role to his name — 22 touchdowns, seven picks, 3,547 yards (but only 22 sacks!) in 14 starts.
Anyway, the Broncos have their starting quarterback. Keenum Country.
