A man died from a gunshot wound after being found in the street Saturday morning in southeast Colorado Springs, police said.

The shooting happened on the 2200 block of Farnsworth Drive near Bricker Elementary School just before 5:30 a.m., said Lt. Howard Black, a spokesman for Colorado Springs police.

A Gazette delivery man called police after hearing at least one gunshot, Black said.

The victim, whose name and age have not been released, died after he was taken to an area hospital. Another man who was at the site of the shooting when police arrived was detained as a person of interest, Black said.

“This is clearly a suspicious death,” he said.

No further details were available Saturday morning.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the department at 444-7000 or, to remain anonymous, contact the Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 634-7867.

“We would ask that neighbors be vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” Black said in a news release.

If the shooting is ruled a homicide, it could be the city’s 11th this year. The city's first homicide of 2016 happened exactly a year ago.

Alton Kelly, 25, was fatally shot early Wednesday outside his family’s East Vermijo Avenue home. If the El Paso County coroner deems the Wednesday shooting a homicide, it would be the 10th of 2017.
