LETTERS: High school play exceptional; airline's customer service missing
Play was exceptional performance
I was totally amazed at how professional the production of "Beauty and the Beast" that Pine Creek High School put on last week was. The orchestra containing members from seven different schools was outstanding. The choreography was fantastic. The choral numbers and solos were exceptional. I talked to a parent of one of the performers of the play and was told that these performers worked five hours a day starting last fall. That is many, many hours, and it showed. In this time where many of the arts are having budget cuts, we need to look at keeping them from being cut. The Pine Creek arts department is great. These thespians, producers, directors and parents need to be commended for their exceptional work. It was enjoyed by many - money well spent.
Great job, Pine Creek. Thanks for the memories.
Not better than the private sector
Hmm ... let's see. We are starting the process of building several new hospitals and clinics to expand health care coverage. This is private sector money. These buildings will be started, built on budget and operational before the one new VA hospital, built with government money and oversight, which was started several years ago, is still not completed. We won't even talk about budget because apparently the VA hospital does not have one. Just empty every pocket and the check is to be blank except for the Uncle Sam signature. And the politicians still insist they can do it better than the private sector. Yeah, right.
Not easy to turn the other cheek
In reference to James W. White's letter, (April 16): You are correct in that Jesus did weep over Syria and He wept over what Assad did to his very own people! Although they are from different tribes, that tends to be the difference, and accounts for the slaughter of human beings. But after seeing the dead and dying in Khan Shiekhun, this president decided that it could not and will not be tolerated because no other country has the guts to do anything about it, much like the last administration!
Sometimes the United States is thrown into a conflict that we do not want to be in, but how can anyone stand by and watch the likes of Hussein and Assad murder humans in cold blood and do nothing about it! We finally had the sense to do something about Hitler - after he had murdered over three million people! Do you understand what happens to a bully if you do not stand up against him? That is a rhetorical question. You, Mr. White think the USA is stupid and arrogant to do what we did, but I do not think Jesus would want us to stand by and watch dictators in this world murder innocent humans. I, as a Christian, would have to stand up to somebody who was being mistreated by a bully - just because I am a Christian does not mean I must lie down and allow a bully beat on me or anybody else! I know what the Bible says about turning the other cheek, but I haven't reached that point in my walk with the Master yet.
Media shouldn't hide abuse
"Argument leads to woman being shot." "Husband upset with estranged wife shoots and wounds 4." "Murder-suicide cause of shots fired in Denver."
Headlines such as these omit two key words: Domestic abuse. For reasons that I have yet to precisely comprehend, the national media does not like to use the words "domestic abuse" or "domestic violence" in headlines. I am torn between wondering if it is a lack of education in our communities or the words are being left out intentionally.
The media plays a role in society and does every community a disservice when eliminating these words from headlines. Domestic abuse is rarely discussed due to shame, fear and a lack of awareness. When citizens are not educated on domestic abuse, it makes it more difficult for targets of abuse to feel safe coming forward to friends, family, and co-workers.
So often, society shames and blames victims and a stigma is attached in doing so. One in three women and one in four men have experienced domestic abuse within an intimate partner relationship. It is time the media stops hiding in the shadows and bring awareness to domestic abuse that is severely needed.
Stop the partisan approach
Our national legislators take an oath of office to uphold the Constitution against enemies, both domestic and foreign. For that matter, so did Donald Trump. It is overdue that these lawmakers stop placing their party loyalty and political ambition over their sworn duty. It is time for Congress to require a special prosecutor to investigate Trump's Russia contacts. It is beyond me why the GOP stays silent as the Bannon/Trump White House attacks the First Amendment, the media, the courts, people of color, and women. When will the GOP stop being accessories to this harm to our citizens? We may not be the Koch Brothers, who, with their cohorts, buy Congress. But there are scores of millions of us.
Airline devoid of customer service
The recent events involving United Airlines make me believe that the managers of that "business" are schooled socialists. Business principles such as customer service and the rights of customers to the product in which they have already payed for are basic business practices that reinforce a company's bottom line. The actions of United Airlines remind me of a socialist airline, devoid of service and the "customers" are made to feel that the airline is doing them a great favor. The management of United Airlines that forced customers off of a flight in order to allow four party members, I mean United Airline employees, on board to take their places should seek employment elsewhere, perhaps for the state airline of Cuba.
