After a crash involving a District 11 school bus sent three elementary school kids to the hospital Monday afternoon, a bus with seat belts will take over the route.

The bus was carrying 37 students from Columbia Elementary School, 835 E. St. Vrain St., to an after-school program. The crash reported about 2:45 p.m. Monday at the intersection of East Cimarron and South Weber streets.

The bus didn't have seat belts. Only about a third of the district's buses do, said Devra Ashby, a district spokeswoman.

"We're slowly implementing seat belts in all of our fleet, but it takes time and it takes money," she said.

One of three students taken to the hospital following the crash was back at school Tuesday. That student, a third grader, was "feeling fine," Ashby said. The kids had been sent to the hospital to be evaluated.

The other two, both kindergarten students, were dealing with minor injuries. One was at home with a mild headache and concussion, and the other was headed to a doctor for follow-up regarding a bump on the head, Ashby said.

The driver of the white pickup truck, identified as Jonathon Murphy, 23, allegedly ran a red light and struck the bus, police said Monday. The truck was westbound and the bus was southbound.

Murphy was cited with careless driving resulting in injury, police said.

"The majority of the injuries that have been reported to us (are) just bumps and bruises - a lot of shaken-up kids," said Capt. Steve Wilch, a spokesman for the Colorado Springs Fire Department, while on scene Monday.

The bus involved in the crash sustained only minor damages and was later able to drive away from the scene.
