A man who was reportedly setting fire to a grassy area off Interstate 25 Sunday evening remains in jail.

Michael Carruth, 45, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree arson and setting fire to woods/prairies, Colorado Springs police said.

Officers said they drove to Exit 139 off I-25 for a welfare check close to 9 p.m. and saw "flame coming from a male subject holding an unknown item." Grass to the west of southbound I-25 was on fire, police said.

Flames already had burned through an area about 30 feet by 10 feet, but one officer used his fire extinguisher to control the fire's spread until firefighters arrived.

Police later caught up to Carruth and arrested him. Carruth remains in the El Paso County jail on an administrative hold, records show.
